Specimen 01, a collaborative success and a new impetus for watchmaking in Franche-Comté thanks to 3D printing

Specimen 01, a collaborative success and a new impetus for watchmaking in Franche-Comté thanks to 3D printing
What is the need/issue expressed?

Additive manufacturing opens up decisive innovation prospects for industrial products: the watchmaking sector could not ignore this. At the instigation of STAINLESS, a distributor of metal alloys based in Franche-Comté, which was celebrating its 90th anniversary, a consortium of local industrialists and players decided to create a symbolic object, a bridge between tradition and the future: a 3D printed watch. The objective of the approach? To exploit the possibilities offered by the technology to design a watch with an original design and to produce it, to develop the appropriate know-how and services.

Why was Additive Manufacturing technology considered?

Among the competitive levers that additive manufacturing can activate in industry, two areas have been identified as particularly important for the watchmaking sector. On the one hand, the ability to innovate on the shape of parts and to access original designs; on the other hand, the possibility of launching shorter production cycles for watches, in direct response to demand and therefore perfectly adapted to the customer's needs.
